Sidewalk Chalk wsg The Mainstays (Free)
Sidewalk Chalk continues to lead the contemporary evolution of hip-hop, soul, and jazz. The band’s roots are firmly planted in Chicago where all eight members bring their respective talents together to update a sound first heralded in the Native Tongues era but never so musically diverse. The group’s unique arrangement allows them to incorporate numerous styles seamlessly: an MC and female vocalist; a trio of keys, bass, and drums; a horn section with trombone and trumpet; and a tap-dancer. The Mainstays are a funk & soul band based in Kalamazoo, MI. Featuring Andrew Schrock (singer/songwriter), Dutch Conway (bass), and Nate Heymoss (guitar) of Michigan's funk/dance band Funktion, the band draws heavily from the groovy elements that made Funktion a bonafide dance party, while crafting dynamic, insightful, and almost folk-influenced songs.

Flypaper wsg Rootstand ($6 adv/$8 day of)
With soulful vocals, fiercely elegant guitars, and a high energy rhythm section, Fly Paper never fail to amaze and inspire crowds throughout the country with their original songs. Micaela's voice is often compared to that of Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. Her guitar playing carries on the traditions of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmore, and Jimmy Page. Bassist Joe Chamberlin fills the space between with a modern rock style grounded in classic rock sensibilities. Sam Rice brings to the drums, the rock groove of Jimmy Chamberlin and the flair of Buddy Rich, while Saxman/Keyboardist Marty McLean puts the sax back in rock one note at a time. The four piece band fuses elements of rock, folk, and blues into an unforgettable musical experience. For over ten years, Rootstand has set course from the uplands and urban jungles of Michigan to seek their fortune on the seas and sounds of the roots of America and beyond. From fair shores to foul weather, Rootstand has remained stout-hearted; an honor that is reflected in the strength of its crew.

Pete Rock & Slum Village wsg HANiF, Dezert Eez, Maraj, The SEVENth, Analog Ancestry ($22adv/$25day of)
Recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, Pete Rock has played a major role in the game since he came to prominence as half of the duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth. On top of multiple solo albums and mixtapes, Rock has produced and done remixes for dozens of artists in different genres including Nas, Biggie, Kanye West, INI, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Mary J Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, and many others. His name answers the question of who has the illest baselines, horn blares, and ad-libs on the hip hop boards. His blend of jazz, soul, and rap music unites people across race, class, gender, nationality, and geography. Chances are, if you are anywhere near the Detroit music scene, you have heard of the influential hip hop trio that makes up Slum Village. The group was founded in the early 90′s by 3 childhood friends: Baatin, T3, rapper and producer J Dilla, who all grew up together in the Conant Gardens neighborhood of Detroit, MI. After two decades of classic releases, international success, and the tragic loss of Dilla and Baatin, Slum Village continues to represent the unparalleled truth and power of hip-hop.

Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers ($30adv/$35 day of)
Tickets go on sale Friday, February 27 at 10AM. This show is in the Bell's Beer Garden. Rain or shine. Almost three decades after winning a Grammy for Best New Artist and launching one of contemporary music’s most diverse careers, Bruce Hornsby still makes joyful noise as he discovers clever and expansive ways to chronicle dynamic musical snapshots of his often generously collaborative journey. Nothing better illustrates this than Hornsby’s communion with his longtime band, the Noisemakers. And nothing catches that connection with more daring fluency than a couple of live collections released eleven years apart; 2011’s Bride of the Noisemakers, a set of concert recordings from 2007 to 2009, and 2000‘s Here Come the Noisemakers, which initially unveiled Hornsby and his band’s free-wheeling live approaches to the Virginia-born pianist and composer’s memorable songs. Tapping into many of the genres that have influenced Hornsby’s music over the years—pop, jazz, bluegrass, country and modern classical—these collections feature songs from previous releases such as Big Swing Face (2002), Halcyon Days (2004), and Levitate (2009) -- as well as from Camp Meeting (2007), which featured bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette, plus Hornsby’s acclaimed early releases such as Scenes From The Southside (1988), Hothouse (1995), and Spirit Trail (1998).
