Dan Whitaker & The Shinbenders play their own version of country music. It blends classic country, western swing, hillbilly and outlaw and features Whitaker's original country and western material. The combo also plays a variety of country classics ranging from the 1940's period of Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb through the 50's and 60's, with artists such as George Jones, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Charlie Pride, Bob Dylan, and into the 70's outlaw era of Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, The Allman Brothers, and Gram Parsons. And yes, this means they won't play Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, or Big & Rich no matter how many times you ask.
Organist Jim Alfredson and guitarist Joe Gloss originally met in 1997 at Michigan State University. Together they co-lead various groups before meeting drummer Randy Marsh in the fall of 2000. His experience and leadership served as the last piece of the puzzle and organissimo was born. With its blend of raw talent and original music, organissimo quickly became one of the most popular organ-based trios of the greater midwest.
"organissimo invigorate[s] the organ trio tradition with fresh takes on the genre... eclectic... classic... inventive... " ~ Bill Milkowski on JazzTimes.com, Sept. 2006
Q: What is Afro-Electronique?
A: The explosion of afro-beat, electronic texture, heavy groove, and polyrhythmic layers created by the dynamic 8-piece group Mifune.
Formed as a composers collective in 2004, Mifune started with a mission: Create great original music that is rewarding on multiple levels for both the group and the listeners. Not to just "play" the music but extract music from the soul and send it to the mind. A common need for deep musical expression brought members Cutty, Jacob, and Christine together. In late night sessions of exchanging ideas, playing and fleshing out musical whims in Jacob's studio, the trio realized that they had a rare opportunity to create something truly unique, truly quality, truly Mifune.
Goldmine Pickers is a young, passionate, four-piece band weaving together roots and inspiration in bluegrass, jazz, folk and Irish traditions to create an energetic new space in Americana music. With memorable acoustic performances, the group has magnetized audiences in intimate to expansive concert halls, at festivals and on live radio shows with inspiring interplay between guitar, mandolin, upright bass and a fiery fiddler and soaring, heartfelt harmonies.
Lead vocals are shared smoothly between Lukas Simpson (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, harmonica) and Jay Lapp (mandolin, guitar), with contributions by Sean Hoffamn (fiddle) -- they "capture the audience" with "really nice, tight three-part harmonies," described a reviewer at acousticguitar.com, who also said, "I was virtually stunned at the quality of play at the concert.
Strange Arrangement, a Chicago-based quartet, combining what they know and love about musical genres layered with intriguingly testimonial lyrics. The members of Strange Arrangement recently reunited, in Chicago, during the fall of 2006. During the decade that passed before this reunion, the members of the band performed an array of styles from jazz to rock, reggae and funk to bluegrass, as well as Afro-Cuban and West African Music, each lending an expression to their overall sound.
Uncle Boogie Pants is a Chicago based rock band whose shows put a large emphasis on improvisation. The band has been writing a library of original material that is constantly growing. With songs ranging from straight ahead rock to orchestrated mayhem, every show brings new original music, and jams that tie it all together. Their first album, Volume and Verse, has recently been completed and is receiving rave reviews. Don’t miss them live!
Sweet Japonic’s sound has rapidly matured into an infectious blend of blues, roots, soul and reggae influenced rock music. Matt Young delivers electrifying guitar licks over the solid grooves provided by Ryan Braman (bass) and Roy Wallace (drums), and the addition of Chicago ’s Davy Tyson ..board and organ allows for an impressively diverse and robust sound. The nimble musicianship compliments Lucas Wilson’s soulful, arresting vocals, creating a sound that is at once familiar and yet new.
What a way to open up the beer garden!
Hailing from Lansing, Michigan -the heart of Factory Town, USA- these young men pound out their own brand of roots combining old-time country, swing and blues. Together, they achieve the seemingly impossible task of making the most traditional sounds contemporary playing what Performing Songwriter Magazine calls "some of the liveliest and most rocking acoustic roots music around." Upright Bassist Dominic Suchyta and multi-instrumentalist brothers Andy & Joe Wilson compliment the strong songwriting talents of singer/songwriter Josh Davis, who's haunting vocals paint a picture of rural and urban Michigan breaking its blue-collar back under troubled times.
Rachel Davis and Daisy May will be opening up for these guys. This is a show you will not want to miss. Come see some of the most talented folks in Michigan!
