Bell’s Brewery is Presenting Sponsor of 2008 PDGA
August 11, 2008
Think Olympics. Think Iron Man. Now think of them with Frisbees. Bell’s is the presenting sponsor of the 2008 PDGA Disc Golf World Championships taking place right here in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek area.
More than 1,000 athletes from around the world will be here in town from August 8-16, 2008 to participate in the World Championships of this increasingly popular sport. The event will be hosted on 10 of southwest Michigan’s local disc golf courses. This is the largest disc golf event to date and our area will be host to players from four of the seven continents.
“This is truly a historic event,” says Larry Bell, owner of Bell’s Brewery, “Athletes from around the globe will be here in our town to compete, to share in our local culture and to enjoy our hospitality. This is a great opportunity for Kalamazoo and Battle Creek businesses and citizens.”
Disc golf, if you haven’t taken the opportunity to play one of the local courses, was invented back in the late 70’s by the father of the sport – “Steady Ed” Headrick. The rules are simple and follow the basic principles of ball golf – a series of drives and puts to land the disc at the final target – a polehole or basket. Disc golf is a relatively easy game to learn and is perfect for all ages – although at the World Championships you can expect a level of prowess and fervor not seen in your average round.
So keep an eye out around town August 8-16, 2008 for athletes and visitors from all over the world. More than a few will probably be found in the beer garden at Bell’s Eccentric Café, relaxing after a game and probably more than willing to share the story of a great shot, a near miss and what it is like to fly half way around the world to play in a funny little town called – Kalamazoo.
