More ways to connect
Today, Bell’s Brewery is the oldest craft brewer east of Colorado.
More than 25 years ago, things were a little different.
Bell’s had one employee – Larry Bell. The fermenters were plastic garbage pails. The brew kettle was a 15-gallon stock pot (still used even now), kegs were washed on an inverted pallet and the heat exchanger was a copper coil in a bucket.
When customers showed up on Fridays to buy one-gallon plastic, collapsible containers filled from the tap, the thermostat was turned up from 50 to 60 degrees. There was even a jump rope to help keep you warm.
A lot has changed since Bell first started brewing in 1985. But what has not, is Bell’s commitment to brewing thoughtful, creative and artistic craft beer.
Our original brewery - Downtown Kalamazoo
Come see where it all started. Free tours of our original and still functioning brewery, connected to the Eccentric Café at 355 E. Kalamazoo Ave., are offered on Saturdays and Sundays (except when posted).
They generally run about 30-45 minutes and are available at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Sundays.
When you arrive, please add your name to the list in the atrium.
Our Comstock Brewery
With our original brewery surrounded on three sides by train tracks along with Kalamazoo Ave. on the fourth side, we recognized a need to plan for more space in which to grow early on. In 2003, we opened our Comstock Brewery.
Our most recent addition was a 200-barrel brewhouse along with expanded grain handling facilities, additional fermentation space and more.
Free guided tours are offered on Saturdays (except when posted) at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Our new brewhouse was designed for self guided tours as well. Everyone is invited to walk through at their own pace. Observation decks offer a prime viewing of our Bottling Hall, our older 50-barrel brewhouse, fermentation cellars and more.
Everyone is welcome to visit the brewing gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
What about large groups?
We can also accommodate large groups, we just ask that you let us know in advance when you are planning on visiting so we can make the appropriate arrangements. Please contact our tour coordinator for more information.
Are there samples?
Unfortunately, we do not offer samples at our Comstock Brewery. The Eccentric Cafe is located a short 12-minute drive away and we encourage anyone who is interested to stop by and sample our beer - or while on a tour of the brewery there.
