JOB TITLE: Land Stewardship Intern

LOCATION: Brewery, Comstock, MI

REPORTS TO: Land Steward

FLSA POSITION TYPE: Variable Hours, Hourly (Paid) Non-Exempt

INTERNSHIP DATES: 04/30/2018- 07/20/2018

EXTERNAL POSTING DATES: 02/02/2018- 02/25/2018

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting in the maintenance of all facets of the Bell's Brewery grounds, with an emphasis on conserving and improving existing landscapes, hop field, and irrigation systems.  Assists the Land Steward in wide variety of aspects for the betterment of the earth, facilities and employee morale. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following.

• Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery.

• Assists with the planning, planting, and maintenance for the Bell’s Hop Field.

• Researches, prepares, and maintains new and existing forms of compost. 

• Researches, recommends, implements, and maintains irrigations systems.

• Maintains accurate and update records.

• Responsible for general outdoor grounds, building and facilities care and upkeep. Specific responsibilities could include but would not limited to:

o Weed control (hand pulling, string trimmer, spraying)

o Watering trees, shrubs and turf

o Hops care/scheduling

o Planting trees, shrubs, annual flowers

o Installing hardscapes

o Cleaning/picking up trash from grounds

o Implementing 5S strategies

o Driving utility vehicle, trucks, forklifts, aerial lifts and tractors

• May be asked to handle and apply fertilizers and chemicals

• Create an end-of-program presentation to be given to members of the management team.

 

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

• Must possess a valid driver’s license 

 

MATERIALS/MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED:

• A variety of hand tools.

• Fork and scissor lifts. 

• Lawnmowers, string trimmers, leaf blower, and other gas powered tools.

• Cleaning agents and other hazardous chemicals.

 

IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Skills applicable to general maintenance functions. This skill set would include but not be limited to carpentry, painting, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and boiler/steam. 

• Ability to be enthusiastic, friendly and customer service oriented

• Organizational skills: must be able to efficiently multi-task and prioritize.

• Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable working in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination. 

• Ability to work independently with little supervision – self motivated

• Excellent oral, analytical, written, and communication skills

• Ability to maintain clean and orderly workspaces

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:

• Must be a junior, senior from an accredited program with an emphasis in Soil Science, Landscape Management, Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Studies or related field.

• General understanding of horticultural practices and soil science.

• Interest/awareness in hop growing and compost operations

• Prior experience in landscape and turf maintenance, farming, interior plants.

• Desire to connect people to the outdoors.

• Willingness to get dirty.

• Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb.

• Ability to talk, hear, and smell.

• Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 58 lbs. 

• Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms. Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.

• Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. 

• Ability to operate lifts, vehicles, tractors, lawn mowers, hand tools, string trimmers

• Ability to climb ladders

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

• That of a brewery/food processor & surrounding grounds.

• A food processing facility is a continuously clean/sterile environment.

• The noise level in certain parts of the brewery can be loud, in excess of 80 dB.

• May work regularly around high voltage lines, flame, hot water, and steam.

• Works with hazardous materials.

• Works near moving mechanical parts.

• Works on or near wet floors and with wet equipment.

• Occasionally will work full days out of doors.
