JOB TITLE: Sustainability Intern

LOCATION: Brewery, Comstock, MI

REPORTS TO:  Sustainability Specialist 

FLSA POSITION TYPE: Variable Hours, Hourly (Paid) Non-Exempt

INTERNSHIP DATES: 06/04/2018 – 08/24/2018

EXTERNAL POSTING DATES: 02/02/2018- 02/25/2018

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Sustainability Intern is responsible for data collection relevant to Environmental and Social Sustainability Department projects along with support for the daily operations of the department. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following.

• Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery.

• Assays the purity of CO2 produced during fermentation in adherence with a strict sample schedule.

• Enters and analyzes data from CO2 purity testing.

• Conducts 20 or more in-person interviews with individuals throughout the company.

• Develops a summary report of interview data.

• Supports the Environmental and Social Sustainability Department with daily duties and special projects. 

• Creates an end-of-program presentation to be given to members of the management team.

• Assists in documenting processes as they relate to standard operating procedures (SOP’s).

• Additional tasks may be assigned as time allows including, but not limited to, project cost analysis calculations, KPI data entry, and packaging information data entry. 

• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends.

 

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

MATERIALS/MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED:

• Computer and standard office equipment (printer, scanner, copier)

• Lab equipment (trace oxygen gas meter, sampling supplies)

 

IMPORTANT SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Organizational skills: must be able to effectively multi-task and prioritize.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products with a focus on Excel. 

• Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

• Excellent oral, analytical, and group presentation communication skills.

• Ability to collaborate, communicate, and relate to people at all levels within the organization.

• Self-directed individual who is a team player.

• The ability to safely handle potentially hazardous chemicals. 

• An understanding of the critical role of sanitization.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:

• Recent graduate or upperclassman in pursuit of a degree from an accredited program that includes experience or applied coursework related to environmental science, food science, brewing science, communications, environmental compliance, environmental engineering, 

• Research and data collection experience.

• While performing each of the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk, and use a computer and other office equipment.

• Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms. Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. 

• Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Frequently lifting up to 25 pounds, occasional lifting up to 58 pounds

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

• Job duties require work in an office setting and laboratory setting with frequent trips into operational areas. 

• The employee frequently must work in a sterile environment. 

• The noise level in certain parts of the brewery is occasionally loud (80-90 dB). 

• The employee works around high voltage, flame, hot water, and steam. 

• The employee works with hazardous materials. 

• The employee works near moving mechanical parts. 

• The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
