JOB TITLE: Quality Control Lab Intern

LOCATION: Brewery, Comstock, MI

REPORTS TO:  Laboratory Manager 

FLSA POSITION TYPE: Variable Hours, Hourly (Paid) Non-Exempt

INTERNSHIP DATES: 06/04/2018 – 08/24/2018

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for carrying out tasks associated with Quality Control testing procedures.



• Adheres to and advances the “Safety Always” culture of Bell’s Brewery.

• Assists the Quality Team in daily duties.

• Conducts aseptic sampling throughout the brewery (cellar, bottling hall, rinse water)

• Conducts ABV, VDK, PCR, & plate aseptic sample prep and data analysis. 

• Conducts and collects pH measurements.

• Maintains lab beer inventory.

• Conducts CO2 analysis on packaged beer.

• Analyses and finds peak cell density during fermentation. 

• Participates on the Sensory panel.

• Preparation and pouring of media.

• Gram staining. 

• Sample preparation including centrifugation, filtration, and dilution.

• Reporting unusual findings to Lab Manager.

• Assist with data organization with the lab. 

• Basic laboratory housekeeping, including dishwashing.

• Observes and implement 5S practices with the Lab spaces. 

• Create an end-of- program presentation to be given to members of management team.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

• Must be 21 years or older as of 06/04/2018



• Brewing laboratory equipment

o Gas chromatograph

o Spectrometer

o pH meter

o Dishwasher

o Automatic pipettes 

o CarboQC

o Alcolyzer and densitomer

o Centrifuge


• Other equipment typically found in a brewing lab.

• Cleaning agents, sanitizing agents, microbiological media, organic solvents, corrosive acids and bases, and other hazardous laboratory chemicals, including some carcinogens and teratogens.



• Strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable addressing diverse groups 

• Organizational skills: must be able to efficiently multi-task and prioritize.

• Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable working in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination. 

• Strong computer skills (MS Office Suite, focus on Excel)

• The ability to safely handle reagents and other potentially hazardous chemicals.

• An understanding of the critical role of sanitation.



• Student in pursuit of a Science degree.

• Prior experience in laboratory environment.

• Prior experience with microbiological assays.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

• Work is primarily performed in a Laboratory setting, with frequent trips to operational area required.

• The work environment is usually that of a brewery.

• The employee frequently must work in a sterile environment.

• The noise level in certain parts of the brewery is occasionally loud (80-90 dB).

• The employee works around high voltage, flame, hot water, and steam.

• The employee works with hazardous materials.

• The employee works near moving mechanical parts.

• The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment.
